How Not to Ask to See Your Tanning Customer’s Eyewear

How NOT to Ask to See Your Tanner’s Eyewear

By Brenda Fishbaugh

Salon owners often inquire how to ask to see client’s eyewear without angering clients. Let’s look at what NOT to do. I was in a salon recently, and the counter person says to the young woman ahead of me, “Do you have your eyewear?” The woman answers, “Yes”. And the attendant continues, “May I see it?” The woman digs in her purse, then goes out to her car and digs around in her car for a while, and comes in red-faced. The customer is, of course, embarrassed and frustrated–two things we’d like to avoid with our valued customers!

I suggest you ask, “May I see your eyewear, please?” EXACTLY like that, EVERY time. It is polite, as it contains two “asks”, with “May I..” and “please”. And the only thing the customer can do is show you their eyewear. If they don’t have it, sell them a disposable pair, or give them a free disposable pair if they are going into any of your upgrade beds. You’ll make more on the upgrade than the few cents you’ll lose on the disposable eyewear.

Please make sure EVERY member of your team asks this EVERY time. If someone skips it, give them bathroom duty for a week or some other unpleasant task. Or give your tanners a free pair of disposables if they catch a staff member not asking the question…it will keep your customers and your tanners paying attention!

Would you like a window cling for your front door that reminds your tanners that eye protection is required?  This FREE window cling is also a reminder to your tanners to grab your eyewear out of the car before standing in line to check-in at your salon and then realize they left their eyewear in the car. For your free window cling, email Brenda@WinkEase.com with your salon name and address and the code ProSun Window Cling and we’ll send it to you free of charge.

  1. JABA Tanning Studio always recommends Wink Ease to our salon clients. If they forget their eyewear we usually give them their first pair free. They usually say they prefer the convenience of these and buy a bakers dozen ?

  2. To avoid having to ask every customer every time about eyewear we make sure to sell them a pair when they buy there tanning package. Thereafter, we have a few we place by our towel rack that customers can borrow if they forget theirs or leave them in there car. This saves alot of time and customers appreciate not being treated like a 5th grader everytime they come in for a tan. They simply drop them in the sanitizer on there way out. We lose maybe 1 pair every month or two. This may not work well for all salons, but it works great for us.
